OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (Running Africa) — On Wednesday, the Burkinabè Football Federation president introduced Amir, ending what the federation described as a rigorous vetting of potential successors to Brama Traoré.

According to AP, Traoré was fired in January after the Stallions' poor Africa Cup performance in Morocco, where they were ousted in the round of 16 by the Ivory Coast.

The federation said that the team's performance in Morocco "caused deep disappointment among supporters, stakeholders in national football, and governing bodies."

The new coach's initial remarks were enthusiastic and aspirational. "I'm glad that we have met and truly excited to be here. I know Burkina Faso is a football-loving country. I think we can do big things together with the Stallions, a team deserving of a major reputation in African football," he said.

The new coach must immediately prepare for the next FIFA international break in March. It's still unclear who the Stallions' opponents are for the current window.

Amir Abdou’s immediate priority will be restoring pride and confidence within the team. The Franco-Comorian coach first gained international recognition in 2021 when he guided the Comoros national team to the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in the country’s history, a breakthrough that transformed perceptions of Comorian football.

He later built on that momentum with the Mauritania national team, where he delivered one of the tournament’s biggest surprises at AFCON 2023, leading Mauritania to a historic victory over defending champions Algeria. The result further cemented Abdou’s reputation as a tactically disciplined manager capable of maximizing the potential of his squads.

At club level, Abdou also enjoyed notable success with FC Nouadhibou, winning two Mauritanian league titles. Most recently, he coached in Morocco’s top division with Hassania Agadir, further expanding his experience across African football.

Abdou is known for putting together tight defensive units and encouraging teamwork. He is now in charge of a Burkina Faso team that has both experienced internationals and up-and-coming players.

"Wearing a national team shirt is not an accomplishment in itself. It's about playing for the national team," the Franco-Comorian coach stated during his presentation. "The players need to know and understand that the team, and above all, the nation's patriotism is important."
