Two hundred thirty-three landed at Bram Fischer International Airport on Wednesday, as part of the gradual withdrawal of 1,000 troops.
The soldiers were initially deployed to the north of Kivu over a year ago amid heightened tensions between M23 rebels and the DRC military. Their return results from a ceasefire agreement, signaling a shift toward diplomacy within the region. The conflict has claimed the lives of thousands of civilians and at least 14 SANDF soldiers.

Of the troops that have returned, five groups have completed their demobilization process, which included the provision of medical and psychological support. The process involves assessments from social workers and psychologists, as well as screenings for injuries or health concerns.
Welcoming the sixth group on Monday, South African Navy Chief, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, thanked the brave soldiers for their continued service and commitment to the country. "Let us embrace knowledge gained from deployment. The challenges you faced have given you valuable skills that will strengthen our defense force", he said.
