These arrests are part of a one-week-long operation titled Operation Vala Umgodi to eradicate illegal mining activities.

South Africa is grappling with the fallout from more than 6,000 abandoned mines, now magnets for illegal mining activity. The so-called “zama zamas”—many from neighboring Lesotho and Mozambique, alongside unemployed South Africans—operate without permits, extracting minerals in hazardous conditions and fueling a growing security and economic crisis.

Police spokesperson Donal Mdhluli confirmed that the miners will be charged with breaking immigration laws and for illegal mining. He also assured that more arrests are imminent as many miners remain underground. "This message needs to be spread, and illegal mining will not be tolerated," he said.

The mine management welcomed the arrests, commending law enforcement for protecting their operations.
