Nigerians stranded in Qatar appeal for help after airspace closure amid US–Iran tensions
A group of Nigerian travelers stranded in Qatar has issued a public appeal for help after being unable to leave the country following the temporary closure of Qatari airspace.

Doha, Qatar (Running Africa) — In posts shared on X (formerly Twitter), several affected passengers described worsening conditions at Hamad International Airport, highlighting the challenges faced by vulnerable travelers, including children, older people, and families who have reportedly been stuck in transit for days.
According to the stranded Nigerians, many foreign nationals have already been evacuated by their respective governments, while most Nigerians remain at the airport awaiting assistance. The passengers say they have reached out to both the Nigerian consulate and embassy in Qatar, but claim that no concrete solution has been provided so far.

Qatar temporarily closed its airspace as escalating geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran disrupted travel across the Middle East, following US and Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets. The strikes significantly heightened regional security concerns and triggered widespread flight disruptions.
The situation further intensified after the attacks reportedly resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, ending his 36-year rule. Iranian authorities later confirmed that his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, had been appointed as his successor.
Iranian officials also reported at least 787 fatalities, including 165 schoolgirls and staff members, after a strike hit a primary school in Minab during the early stages of the conflict.

There are growing fears that more Nigerians may be stranded in other Middle Eastern countries as airlines continue to adjust flight routes and suspend operations due to the ongoing conflict.
Meanwhile, Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged affected citizens to remain calm while authorities monitor the situation.
Qatar Airways has also announced flexible rebooking options for impacted passengers. The airline confirmed on March 9 that parts of the airspace had partially reopened, raising hopes that stranded travelers may soon be able to resume their journeys and return home safely.
